Fort Lauderdale pet sitter asks, do cats get jealous?
Do you ever wonder if cats get jealous, do they feel human emotions? Cats have always been somewhat of a mystery. They live in their own secret world. They are inquisitive, smart, playful, affectionate, and aloof but yet they still seem to live in a world of their own.
Currently I have a situation going on in my house and it makes me wonder if cats get jealous. I have a 9 year old Russian Blue named Simon. He is very much a laid back kind of guy. Love to eat, nap on the front porch and have his bell rubbed. He was very content being an old child after he lost his sister Chloe.
Chloe was almost 17 when she passed away and Simon was 6. She tolerated her little brother at first but eventually they became friends. Three years had passed before I decided to get Simon a little brother. I found a Russian Blue breeder in Boca and adopted Calvin.
Calvin was a wiry little guy, full grown and only weighing 7lbs. He looks like a kitten next to his big brother Simon. After a few weeks of hissing Simon accepted Calvin and they became fast friends. They would wrestle and chase each other through the house and of course nap on the porch together. All was peaceful in their little kitten world.
After about 2 years Simon started to slow down and I thought it would be nice to get a little brother for Calvin. I went back to the same breeder and adopted Henry.
The introduction was not as smooth as I would have liked. We went through about 2 weeks of hissing. Calvin had never hissed before so I was a bit surprised the first time he hissed. His behavior started to change and I started to wonder if cats get jealous.
After the constant hissing stopped I thought we were home free. Simon and Henry became fast friends and Calvin seems to have turned into Jan Brady, the neglected misunderstood middle child.
His hissing is now a daily event. If Henry is in Calvin’s line of sight I hear a hiss. Should Henry get in Calvin’s way he gets a paw to the head.
At times Calvin will allow me to pick him up. Usually after a few minutes I get a growl and a hiss.
It leaves me wondering…do cats get jealous, do they feel human emotions? or is Calvin just pissed off?
I am happy to report that after 2 months all them are getting along great. They eat, nap and play together and often come home to find all three of them fast asleep on the bed!
