The lab comes from a line of fishing and retrieving dogs in Newfoundland and Labrador, an Atlantic coastal province in Canada near the Labrador Sea.

This breed also has ties to the Newfoundland water dog. These dogs were a huge advantage to fisherman with their natural physique, their coat that repels water and a tail that is wide at the base which functions as a type of rudder when swimming.

Within this breed, there are many kinds of retrievers. Labrador Retrievers are often used for hunting and are referred to as gun dogs or bird dogs. Retrievers are commonly used when hunting waterfowl.  This particular breed of dog can be trained to sit still until he’s commanded to retrieve the mark. He can withstand difficult conditions during hunting and gaming season. The lab is the perfect companion for a hunter.

Regular exercise and a balanced diet are important for every type of dog, but more vital with this breed. The Labrador retriever tends to gain weight if he is not active. The most common health issue for this dog is obesity. Although labs like to be indoors, near people, they have lots of energy. So, you have to make an effort to get him outdoors to move and play. If you keep your pooch healthy, he can live up to 10-12 years. A full-grown lab is about 21-24 inches tall and can weigh 50-80 pounds.

Here are some tips for caring for your pet; his coat was designed to be water resistant and resistant to soil and dirt, so you only need to comb his fur about once a week. If possible, you should take your buddy for a swim. This is a very natural activity for this dog and very good exercise.
