Pet Health Care Costs

pet health care costsPet health care costs are on the rise. These days, pet parents spend quite a bit of money on our pets.  Between toys, beds, clothes then add in the medical bills, it is almost like raising a child.  If you’re like the rest of us, you’re probably always looking to save a buck or two! There are ways that you can cut pet health care costs. Below are a few pointers to help you figure out how.

5 Ways to Help Cut Pet Health Care Costs:

Feed your pet properly.  Don’t over feed your pets.  We humans love to share food with our pets.  We feel like they are going to starve if we don’t give them three square meals a day.  Work with your vet to ascertain the correct amount of food your pet should be consuming.  Make sure you are feeding your pet high quality food.  Cheaper food is made of less digestible fillers and artificial flavoring which has zero nutritional value.  Feeding your pet a low quality diet can cause serious allergies, digestive issues and cause your pet to gain weight.

Visit the Vet.  It is very important that you take your pet to the vet for exams at least twice a year.  A pound of prevention my friend.  An exam may catch something while it is still easily treatable and that can save you big bucks in the long run.  Regular exams can keep an eye on dental issues, internal and external issues, ears and eyes as well as heart worm prevention and tick and flea control.

Set up a Pet Emergency fund.  Put a few bucks aside each week in a special savings account.  This account will help you fund any emergencies or health issues associated with your pet.  Being prepared puts less stress on you and your pocket book but it also allows you to be ready to address any medical issues that may arise in your pet.

Shop around.  Check out local veterinary offices in your area.  You don’t have to take your pet to the nearest vet.  Find one that is cost effective.  Many offices offer a multi – pet discount as well as senior pet discounts.  Also, low cost spay/neuter clinics are popping up all over.  Many communities have more than one.  These clinics also provide low cost vaccinations as well as micro-chipping and other services. A little research goes a long way! Besides, you should be interviewing vets anyway.  All vets are not one size fits all, you know?

Invest in Health Insurance for your pet.  Purchasing health insurance for your pet can save you literally thousands of dollars across your pet’s life span.  A small investment each month is definitely worth it in the long run.  There are pet insurance policies for every pet and every budget.  Star now before your pet becomes ill as many policies do not cover preexisting conditions.

All of these tips will help keep your pet heath care costs down along with keeping your wallet and your pet in tip top health!

  3. Thanks for sharing this advice on lowering costs of taking care of your pet! I agree that it is good to get good deals on your pet’s health, but you also need to be sure they are getting adequate care. If you don’t make sure they are healthy, then you could end up losing a lot of money in the long run. Plus, you shouldn’t own a dog or cat unless you are prepared to spend the amount necessary to take good care of them.
