South Florida hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. It is wise to have a disaster plan for keeping your family safe but what about a disaster plan for your pet? Let’s talk about pet owner hurricane preparedness.
Every pet needs be outfitted with an identification tag which includes:
- Owner’s name and Address
- Name of Pet
- Phone Number
Having an identification sheet for your pets can also be helpful. Be sure to include a current picture and your pets’ favorite hiding places, especially if you have cats and finally your pet’s veterinarian contact information. This information could be very helpful in locating a lost pet. It is also wise to have an emergency kit prepared.
Pet Owner Hurricane Preparedness Pet Kit
- Dry or canned food (one weeks worth)
- Bottled water
- Bowls, one for food and one for water
- Leash and collar – I suggest a harness or choke collar. More than likely the dog will be frightened and this will help control them.
- Blanket
- Pillow cases are great for transporting cats or other small pets
- Muzzle, this will come in handy if your dog is injured
- Current photo of you and your pet in the event you get separated
Pet Owner Hurricane Preparedness Emergency Kit
- Gauze Pads or rolls
- Adhesive Tape (1” roll)
- individually-Wrapped Sanitary Napkins (for bleeding control)
- Bandages
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Neosporin
- Rubbing Alcohol

- Saline Solution
- Q-tips
- gloves
- Zip lock plastic bags
Pet owner hurricane preparedness is a must. There are so many things to tend to and think about when a hurricane is on the way. Being proactive and prepared is the way to go.
A pet owner hurricane preparedness kit is not only for hurricanes. The weather conditions have been so strange lately this applies to any natural disaster. As always we hope for a quiet and inactive hurricane season.
